Mountain Biking

There are 890 miles of trails and roads in the Gila Wilderness that are in non-wilderness areas and can be used by mountain bikers. The Gila National Forest is the backdrop for the professional Tour of the Gila and Grand Fondo Tour. Generally, the trails are hilly and rocky, winding through mixed conifer forests, ponderosa forests and open grasslands.

With a mostly warm and dry climate, many miles of the trails at lower elevations are open during the winter. During the summer monsoon season, dangerous storms can develop in the afternoon; it is best to ride early in the morning. Please avoid riding on excessively muddy trails.

Key areas include Little Walnut, Gomez Peak, the Burros and Fort Bayard but there are also additional trails/roads to ride outside of these areas.
