The Gila National Forest offers roughly 150 miles of trails designated for vehicles less than 50 wide.
In addition to these routes, there are thousands of miles of designated, unpaved back roads and Forest Service roads open to street-legal, high-clearance vehicles and other motorized vehicles, as designated on the MVUM.
These trails and roads wind through scenic pinion/juniper, and ponderosa forests, as well as desert landscapes, with everything from beginner-friendly loops to challenging rock-crawling routes for ATVs, UTVs, and motorcycles.
Responsible riding starts with staying on designated trails and only riding where it’s legally permitted—protecting both the environment and public access for everyone.
Since some riding areas are multi-use, please give right-of-way to hikers, cyclists, and especially horseback riders. When encountering equestrians, slow down well in advance, stop or move over when and where requested by those on horseback, shut off your engine if necessary, and allow horses to pass calmly.
Leave no trace by packing out all trash, respecting sensitive areas. Avoid traveling on roads or trails that are excessively wet, muddy, or snow-covered, as this can cause lasting resource damage.
Road and trail designations can change due to closures, fire recovery, weather, or management decisions. Always check the current conditions before your trip.

The official U.S. Forest Service Motor Vehicle Use Map (MVUM) is the legal document that identifies roads and trails open to motorized travel. Riders should always consult the current MVUM for the applicable area before heading out and while riding.
